It's Time to Reach Out

We need to start being nicer to liberals.  Yes, you read that right.

Why would I say such a thing?  Have I lost my mind? Turned traitor?  Changed my gender to something with 20 consonants?  No, I’m still a Christian conservative.  So why would I suggest such a thing for an ideology that seems to have become utter anathema to everything I stand for (and vice versa)?

The reason is because the rhetoric in America is superheated to the point that people are making comparisons to the era before the Civil War. We’ve completely forgotten what it means to be American, and especially what it means to be civil.

It’s going to be hard to be the “United” States if we’re busy demonizing half the country in everything we say.  “All libtard traitors this,” “all conservitard wingnuts that.”  We do not live in a country of communists and racists.  We have some, but they are not the majority, or America would be in far worse straits than it is now.

If we want to have a functioning nation, we’re going to have to learn to calm down and reach out to the ordinary folks on the other side. The good news is that this is very possible, as shown by BLM and a Trump rally (of all people).  It’s also important to remember that most people who check things like “liberal,” “conservative,” “Democrat,” or “Republican” on some survey, don’t really know the intricacies of the associated ideology, nor they much care.  Most people on both sides are not hardcore political ideologues.

It is these “Sunday Christian” liberals that we need to reach out to.  They are family members, neighbors, friends, coworkers, and most of them are amenable to a calm, reasonable discussion.  Reasonable discussion does not begin with screaming about how all liberals are idiot traitors.  We’re going to get nowhere antagonizing people with shrill, hysterically angry rhetoric.

I’m not saying we need to roll over or become a doormat.  It isn’t about compromising principles, it’s about changing our tone to be more friendly and approachable.  Recall that Jesus didn’t scream at most sinners for being sinners. He treated them like people and offered them a way out of sin by leading by example. Those who didn’t take up His offer suffered the consequences, and He usually didn’t waste breath belaboring their folly.  He saved his ire for the truly incorrigible, hypocritical, worst of the worst.

Jesus also had some insight on what happens if we fail to even attempt to mend fences: “if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25).  If, despite our best efforts, we can find no common ground, a notion which I do not for a moment believe, then so be it.  But if we claim to bleed red, white and blue, yet fail to swallow our pride, calm our anger, and at least try to be congenial, then we won’t be patriots, we will be exactly the kind of hypocrites Jesus did rail against.

I should also note that many who read this will probably be frustrated with attempts by some on the left to paint every conservative as a racist sexist bigot, etc.  These people are ironically pushing people into the arms of the Alt-Right, which really is those things, by making people feel like there’s no reasonable consensus they can form with liberals, that they’ve been declared an enemy without saying or doing anything except disagreeing.

That works in reverse, too.  Part of the reason we have to fight immediately bashing liberals is to avoid pushing them into the arms of Antifa, etc.  We must create a divide between those who say they are liberal but don’t really act much like it, and the hardcore leftist fringe, the kind that really does burn cars in the streets and wave the Soviet flag around.  Let us not feed the ranks of our enemies at the extreme edges of either side!

I have filmed a video on this subject, for conservatives about liberals, and another one, as a direct call to liberals, asking them to join me in this new approach.  I would politely ask that you share them around as far and wide as you can, because if we don’t spread a message of calming down and coming together (either from me or whomever), then we’re contributing to the downfall and division of America through our negligence.  The laughter will be long and loud in Moscow, Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang.

America deserves better than this.  America deserves our best efforts to remember what we have in common, and how we can politely talk about our differences without shrieking like banshees, feeding the hysteria press machine.  We don’t have to agree, we just have to remember how to disagree without being disagreeable.

It’s time to link arms with any who are willing, to stand united and face a new dawn in America’s history, banishing the darkness of the hyper-partisan division.
We owe a nation as great as America no less.

Well done, Joshua! Love this piece!

Thank you! I know not everyone will love this (I've already been banned from a conservative Facebook group over it), but hopefully it'll get some traction, and hopefully liberals will see this too, and especially my video aimed at them. We cannot let the most shrill, angry pundits and yellow journalists ruin this nation and turn it into warring factions of extremist groups, so they can get clicks and indignant shares while America becomes Somalia.

Forgot to link to the BLM/MAGA rally I referred to in the video. It's truly hope inspiring https://www.facebook.com/NowThisPolitics/videos/1709195305778619/
